SEE ME is keen not only to record the stories of BME communities in Wiltshire today, but also explore the presence of BME individuals and communities throughout Wiltshire’s history. Our earliest written evidence dates back to 1586, with an entry for Maria Mandula “stranger and Aethiop” in the burial register for Calne; while there are numerous references to black people in Wiltshire during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some people also migrated from around the world to our county throughout the twentieth century. Much of our research will take place at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, exploring the Wiltshire Archive Service collections, while we also hope that our project will uncover archives from individuals and community archives that are not yet deposited at the history Centre.
